Laura Kramer

Higher Education Consultant and Writer

 

Laura Kramer consults with colleges, universities, and particular departments and programs as they assess existing policies and practices, and design and implement innovations.  She also works with professional organizations involved with the advancement of members of underrepresented groups, particularly in the sciences and technology.  She has worked with the American Sociological Association’s Departmental Resource Group for more than ten years and with NSF-ADVANCE awardees since the inception of the ADVANCE Program.  In 2007-2008, Kramer served as Program Director for ADVANCE at the National Science Foundation.

 

Currently, Kramer is an evaluator for NSF ADVANCE-funded projects at The College of New Jersey, Iowa

State University (in collaboration with Alice Hogan) and the National Postdoctoral Association. Memberships on external advisory groups of ADVANCE Institutional Transformation projects include: North Dakota State University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Washington State University, and the advisory board for the Northeastern University Institutional Transformation research activities. She is also an external advisory board member for the ADVANCE-PAID grant on organizational change strategies (Ann Austin, PI).


Kramer has served as external evaluator for New Mexico State University (2002, 2003, and 2005), the University of California at Irvine (2005), Utah State University (2006), Idaho State University (2009), the University of Missouri (2009), Skidmore and Union Colleges (2010), and the Commissions on Professionals in Science and Technology (2009-2010).  In addition, Kramer served as consultant to the NSF-funded project “Incentives and Barriers to U.S. Academics’ Participation in International Collaborations” (Kathrin Zippel, PI; 2010), and Purdue University’s Institutions Transformation award (2010).  Several of her evaluation reports are publicly available and can be accessed at each ADVANCE program website through the links provided above.  Reports on consultations with sociology departments are confidential.  Kramer also serves as a proposal reviewer, site visitor and reverse site visitor, and panelist for the National Science Foundation, and has provided assistance to people preparing for funding.

 

Kramer has led workshops on a variety of topics related to organizational functioning, effective teaching, and diversity in the department and in the classroom.
